Who is Boot Strap Farms?
Boot Strap Farms is family owned and operated by Nico van Stralen and his four sons Nicolaas, Jonathan, Simon, and Thomas on their 52 acre farm just outside of Prescott. They raise heritage farm breeds with the belief that the best way to produce food is the natural way. Using both traditional and modern farming techniques they raise a variety of heritage animals without the aid of steroids, growth hormones, supplements, or antibiotics. They are committed to providing consumers with a product that is both healthy and tastes great.
Why Choose Heritage Meat?
Conserving an Endangered Breed
The best way to preserve a rare breed is through the creation of consumer demand. Since many heritage breeds are not popular with high volume corporate meat producers their numbers have dropped significantly to near extinction. Therefore the more demand, the easier it is to maintain a healthy growth among heritage breeds.
Buying Locally
It is estimated that the average Canadian meal travels 1500 miles from the farmer’s field to the consumer’s home. Boot Strap Farms wants to promote local distribution of its products, operating within a 100 mile radius of our farm. Clients can not only be happy that they know the farmer and farm where their food is grown, but as well know that the environmental impact resulting in fuel consumption is far less.
Support a Local Farmer
Unlike corporate farms, small heritage farms believe in the value of their breeds. Farms like Boot Strap Farms are dedicated in preserving breeds that produce fewer offspring and take longer to mature. It is farms like these that are against the mass production and chemically influence foods that line the shelves of many groceries stores today. When you chose to eat heritage meat and other products, you are choosing to support a local farmer.
